Choosing canned corn recipes
Canned corn is already cooked, making it useful in corn muffins, hot dips, chowder and baked sides. Drain it well when a recipe specifies drained corn; excess liquid can change a batter or thin a filling. Cream-style corn is not a direct replacement for whole kernels because it changes both liquid and texture.
| You have | Try | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Whole-kernel canned corn | Corn muffins, hot corn dip or chowder | Whether the recipe asks for drained kernels |
| Frozen corn | Soups and cooked vegetables | Whether thawing and draining are needed |
| Fresh corn | Recipes prepared from kernels or whole ears | Extra preparation or cooking |
How to use opened canned corn
Transfer unused corn to a suitable covered container, refrigerate promptly and follow the label. Our corn-freezing guide explains preparation for fresh ears and kernels; it is not a canning method. For thin chowder, see how to add body without hard-boiling dairy.
Common questions
Can I use canned corn instead of frozen corn?
Often, but check the recipe. Canned corn is already cooked and usually needs draining; frozen corn may contribute more water. Cream-style corn is not a direct replacement for whole kernels.
