Can you freeze cooked rice?
Yes, you can freeze cooked rice. Cool it quickly, freeze it in small portions and reheat it until steaming hot throughout. Rice left warm for too long is not made safe by freezing or reheating.

How to freeze rice
- Cook only what you can cool and store promptly. Spread extra rice into clean, shallow containers rather than leaving it in a large pan.
- Cool as quickly as possible—ideally within one hour—and refrigerate or freeze promptly. Do not leave it in the rice cooker or pan to cool slowly.
- Divide into meal-sized portions in freezer-safe containers or bags. Flatten bags so they freeze quickly, then seal and label with the date.
- Freeze at 0°F/−18°C or below. Aim to use within about a month for a convenient rotation and good quality.

Thawing and reheating
Thaw in the fridge, then use within 24 hours and reheat thoroughly. For microwave reheating, add a small splash of water, cover with a microwave-safe lid that lets steam escape, and stir to remove cold spots. Follow your appliance instructions and check the centre, not just the edges. Do not thaw rice on the counter.
When should rice be thrown away?
Discard rice if you do not know how it was cooled or it was left out too long. Smell and appearance cannot reliably tell you whether rice is safe. Freezing is for properly handled food, not a rescue method.
Does this work for brown rice?
Yes. The same cooling and handling rules apply. Texture varies by rice type, so freeze a small portion first if you are unsure how your usual rice will reheat.
